Posted - 24 May 2008 : 23:02:11 I have been threatned with a debt collector, could any one please tell me what is the difference between a debt collector and a balliff? what authority do they both have? do you have to let a debt collector into your house? am really worried as i have been told if a bill i have outstanding for £2500.00 is not settled in full within 7 days a debt collector will be calling to my house to collect the money i owe. i really have not got the money to pay and am having financial difficultys with other bills and loans that need paying!! need some advice on what they can do?? i have been reading these forums for a few weeks and may decide to try and make myself bankruct to take away the worry!! just can not even afford to do that at the minute..it is not all my own personel debt alot is from a failed business, total debts is around 20k...

As Melanie points out Debt Collectors have no powers and no rights to entry over your property. They are bound by the OFT's guidance on debt collection practice.
You do not have to let them in or even talk to them.

A bailiff has powers given to him/her by the Court to enforce warrants of executions and remove goods to the value of the outstanding debt. A debt collector has absolutely no power at all.
Do you have any disposable income to enable you to make repayments to your creditors, in which case it might be possible to propose an arrangement to repay them over time, if there is no money then bankruptcy would seem to be the most sensible option to avoid things like you have referred to above.
