Hi I left uk nearly 2 years ago after my partner and i where evicted from property as in financial hardship.
I left and came abroad to a new job in the hope of clearing all debts and making a bit of money. However the job here has now fallen through and family hate it and wish to go home.
I am very scared to return as i left debt to bank and credit cards of between 10 & 15 thousand pounds.
I have no means of paying htese when we get back we will only have money for flights and to rent for a few months.
I am scraed i will be arrested and put in prison or something as i left the debts. Is there any advise you can offer me, i have been told i should declare bankrupt as i did try to better my prospects for getting money together by starting over here. But i am worried as i just left the debts without explaination to debtors?
many thanks
Louie

Hi Louie,

As Alan says it not a criminal offenece it is a civil one, you will not be sent to prison.

I would advice, howvever to go to experian or equifax websites and get your credit report this will let you know what status the debts are i.e. if they have taken legal action in your absence.

Before taking any major steps towards bankrupcty I would get settled back in the UK and find out what your job and earning levels are going to be, as you may mind you don't need to go down this road as there are other ways of handling your debts.

Hi Louie

You have not committed a criminal offence - dont worry that you will be put in jail etc.

Probably best to get the clean start and file for bankruptcy - The OR is usually more concerned with bankrupts accruing recent debts rather than those in the past. However there may be other options.

Suggest you contact one of the experts to review your situation and work out what is best for you and your family.

Do advise though that you address matters so that when your fortunes change the debt is behind you.

All the best Alan
