Posted - 07 May 2008 : 18:29:53 Have recently come out of bankruptcy and have a Nationwide flex account which gives me a cash point card, direct debits and standing orders etc. Am very pleased with this account, but they won't consider giving me a debit card, even though I don't want an overdraft.
I recently took on a pre-pay card,a Cash Plus Gold Card which is a Mastercard. Although I have applied to Barclays, HSBC and Alliance & Leicester, was just about to give up - all I want is a proper bank account and debit card all declined my application. Have recently spoken to National Westminster who have suggested a decision could be overriden in the branch and I might get I think it's called a Step account which would give me what I want.
However, having thought about it, I've now got used to the Nationwide account and the pre-pay card, especially as I can look on the Internet and track everything as and when I want. However, is there any account you feel might suit me.

Think the best plan might be to look at the COOP CASHMINDER account. it gives you direct debits / standing orders / telephone banking / Plus a Visa Electron Debit card. This would give you a little more flexibility and would make life easier for day to day purchases.
take care

Posted - 09 May 2008 : 17:36:01 Dear Joy If you've found something that works for you, stick with it! I recall a list of all basic UK bank accounts and what they offer on the Financial Services Authority website. Generally, the facilities are pretty basic for a bankrupt but I've always found the Coop to be sympathetic to people with debt difficulties. The government encourage access to bank acounts no matter what your circumstances, so accounts are on offer. Regards Simon Atkins Licensed Insolvency Practitioner |

Posted - 09 May 2008 : 10:42:26 Hi Joy.
Having been with NatWest for a few years with their step account there are advantages and disadantages as with all accounts. Yes you get a solo/maestro debit card and a D/D facility, No you don't get an overdraft and you cannot in theory go OD, not true. You don't get the OD charges but the bank will charge you £38 for every unpaid D/D which can take you OD if you don't have the money in the account for instance nstead of lettng my account go over by 50p to pay an £11 TV licence D/D they bounced this and then charged me £38 taking me £28 OD and still owing £11 for the D/D. THey send you letters every few months offering you the overdraft facility, even tho you are not entitled to it on the Step account, so they offer to upgrade your account to a current account. They did this to me and because I got fed up of the unpad D/D's I asked for the upgrade and for a small £50 overdraft to cover the unlikely 50p over, I had a new savings account opened up the mini ISA account opened and then finally had a letter saying that I couldn't have the current account, the letter came on the wednesday on the friday I went to the cash point and had my card swallowed by the cash machne, phoned telebanking as it was after 5 and was told it was a faulty cash machine, got put through to the debit/credit card lost/stolen helpline to be told my branch recalled the card, went to branch on the monday to find all my accounts were being closed wth the explanation of "NatWest no longer want your custom" which apparently they CAN do, was told a letter was sent out on the 18th march, brench visit was 24 March, was told I had untill between 14th & 18th April to either send a letter asking to keep Step account open or find a new bank account and set up D/Ds. My account was then closed on 2nd April. I only found out on the 8th April as I went to get money out that I was expecting in there to be told the accounts closed on the 2nd.
Hope I haven't put you off the NatWest, I'm just trying to give you my experience of them. |

Welcome to the forum
I too had a similar situation and have a basic Abbey account and a Cashplus pre paid credit card I have found this to be suitable for my needs.
