I was made bankrupt in 2005, automatic discharge in 2006. Part of my bankruptcy was a debt by way of a loan from a bank. The bank account was in joint names with my wife, but the loan was taken out by me. I have now satisfied the Trustees in Bankruptcy and paid the agreed amount. The bank loan is recorded on my wife's credit rating in full although she had nothing to do with the loan. Can I have this entry removed as my wife was in no way involved, and the debt no longer exists?

Dear Dil
The loan was in your joint names; there was a default, that is, your bankruptcy; and the parties to the loan will have the dafault on their credit record.
If it's been paid in full I suspect it may still count as a default because it was repaid outside the terms of the loan.
Try contacting the credit agency - if you don't ask, you don't get.

It is unlikely that your wife will be successful in getting this entry removed as she is associated to you by way of your marriage.

For an informal chat about any financial difficulties, or advice as to the options available, I can be contacted via my website - www.melaniegiles.com
