Posted - 10 June 2008 : 23:41:15 I moved to California permanently in October 2007 with my wife, who is American. I have debts totaling approx. 19,000 in the UK and have just lost my job. Having trouble finding work. I cannot afford the payments I am making in the UK and need to go bankrupt. What would the procedure be? Would I need to return to the UK? Thanks!

You can nominate a representative to support your application in the UK, and there would therefore be no need to return. I believe that there are a number of "bankruptcy assist" companies who could help you with this, but they will charge fees for their services and I would suggest that this may be upwards of £1,500 to include the Court costs. Probably cheaper for you than a return flight and accomodation costs in the UK.
