Posted - 14 July 2008 : 10:52:59 Hello everyone,
I cannot help but notice that recent postings appear to be containing a lot of negative opinions of OR dealings. As somebody who is due in court this coming Thursday and who will no doubt be meeting the OR shortly afterwards I am increasingly worried about how my personal allowances will be reviewed.
I agree that there are certain luxuries in my monthly expenditure that can be removed or paid for out of my personal allowance, but to expect someone to live like a pauper for 3 years is I think unreasonable. £268 a month on food expenses is ridiculous. I work in the City and whilst I make my own lunch most days there are the occasional days when I nip out to M&S and buy a sandwich, drink and packet of crisps for £5. That is cheap when compared to Eat, Starbucks and all the other numerous franchises in the city of London (£5 a day for lunch is only £2.50 more than the lunch money I got for school dinners some 15 years ago), this totals £25 for the working week only and so £100 a month. Anyone who has worked in the City will know that socialising comes hand in hand with the job and that you are often expected to entertain clients/fellow work colleagues and that this is not always covered by company expenses (which I understand will be taken when my Corporate AMEX account is frozen).
I struggled to pay my creditors £1000 a month and simply got in more and more debt attempting to, I am now scared that apart from my basic allowances (gas, water, electric, rent, insurances etc which total around £1100), all other expenses will be dropped and my creditors will still get their £1000 and all I will get is my car, mobile phone, SKY TV and various other allowances taken away.
Apologies for the long posting but I am truly very worried about this and starting to wonder whether going to work at the same job (which I am starting to hate) for the past 12 years since I left school at 18, and attempting to pay back my debts for so long was actually worth it and should I just chuck my job in and move back in with my Mum and start life again?

Perhaps Suzanne (as an ex-OR examiner) can answer this one!

Posted - 14 July 2008 : 11:37:16 Many thanks Julian,
Just out of interest when are these guidelines for OR's reviewed. I have heard mentioned on this forum a limit of £268 as the maximum for food expenses in a month, are there any other known maximum levels that those of us entering BR should be aware of?
I only ask this as I find it hard to believe that consumer prices are not regularly reviewed (as they are in the CPI), epsecially when it looks like we are heading back to the 80s with high inflation and possible recession.

Posted - 14 July 2008 : 11:27:08 Hi MST,
Most people have a very positive experience with the OR, but sadly, there does seem to be a level of inconsistency across the country. All I can suggest is to be as open as possible. If you disagree with the OR, do it politely and have evidence to back up your position.

Posted - 14 July 2008 : 11:24:49 Agreed there is not a straightforward question within my rant. I was merely venting frustration and hoping that some people could re-post some more positive comments regarding their dealings with OR's.
And I was more or less responding to another thread which stated that the £268 a month was he limit fo rliving expenses and I was complaining how you can set a limit when food bilsl are currently soaring. |

Apologies, but what is your question?
