Hi all,

We plan to hand the keys back to our property and are just wondering what to tell the neighbours. Although we're not best friends with them, we do get on well. We would obviously prefer they didn't know the whole story though so I just wondered if it will be obvious to them once we've gone, what has happened. I mean, does the mortgage lender (or anyone!) put a big notice on the door saying, 'Repossessed' or anything or will the house just stay quietly empty till they sell it again?

Ani deas anyone?

Thanks,

CG

Hi, I totally agree Chris! we moved into a private rented house last saturday, the week after our BR hearing. Obviously, the neighbours COULD have seen it in the local paper, but we dont bu paprs do dont know when our names wet it anyway, but we just told them we couldn't afford the mortgage any more so were giving it back to the mortgage lender and going private rented. They all understood and said we had to do what was best for us, we didn't mention banruptcy, as thats non of their business and they all wished us well after 8yrs of being their neighbours and said they were sorry to see us go!

Its your life and you have to do whats best for you too so don't let anyone pull you down, I'm sure there are lots more pople in the same boat as us who will have to go through this at some point, so try not to worry xx

Thanks for your Help,Helen x

More or less, CG. They obviously saw us moving and it took us nearly 1 week as we did it ourselves....
I know it's hard to know what to do for the best, your head will be all over the place with worry and questions. Tell them what you're happy and comfortable to tell them, it won't stop them wondering and sticking their nose in but what else can you do? Just remember that you are doing this for the best, you are facing upto your problem and dealing with it. Don't let them get to you, rise above it and give yourself a big pat on the back for having the strength to carry on, xxx

Thanks Chris. So what dd you do, just move out without saying a word? Did none of them see you going? It's not as easy as they won't be our neighbours any more. Some of them are busy bodies and again, without going into too much detail, they could be the sort to mess things up for us f they did find out the truth.

At the end of the day, after Saturday they will no longer be you neighbours so whatever they know really won't make any difference to you. When we moved from our mortgaged house we didn't tell the neighbours even though we spoke and were friendly with them in the 8 years we lived next door to them. It really is up to you but sometimes, telling a lie is harder than telling the truth. I've never really been good at making excuses up...sorry I can't suggest anything. Good luck with whatever you decide to say, or not... xx

Thanks for your replies so far!

Well we feel we need to say something at least, as we'll be movng on a Saturday so they'll all see it happening. We can't just not say anything, but we'd really rather they didn't find out about the BR f possible. We're hoping the advert may not go in the paper (we have reasons to ask the judge not to put it in which I don't want to go into on here-hopefully (s)he'll agree!) so we'd probably tell a white lie to the neighbours if they are unlikely to find out any other way.

Thanks again,

CG

Why do you feel you have to tell them anyhting? Your personal life is just that, personal...
If you feel strong enough, tell them the truth, if not, don't tell them anything.....
You could always fib and say that you've won the lottery and are flitting off to your new island you just bought....on your private jet....lol

well, i told my former neighbours who are quite good friends that we'd simply had enough and handed the house back to the mortgage company after it had failed to sell after two years which isnt that far from the truth. And so far there aren't any big neon flashing "Repossessed " signs outside

Hi CG,
Our neighbours went BR last month, and handed the keys back, but moved out a week after BR into rented accom they only told the neighbours that mattered and left the rest to the newpaper,
It is really a matter of choice who you wish to tell, I know our neighbours (who were good friends) only told there real friends.
The property has been empty four weeks now no sign or notice has been erected or posted so I expect the only sign that will go up will be an estate agents sign.

Take Care,
Ann
