Posted - 09 August 2008 : 02:30:29 Hi all,
I've been monitoring this site over the past few months, as my personal debt was getting out of hand and creditor payments were starting to bounce.
My biggest problem was keeping my debt a secret, but after plucking up the courage to speak with a forum expert (thanks Melanie) and tell my parents about my debt, I set about petitioning for personal bankruptcy.
I attended court on 7th August, and was amazed how nice everybody was in the courthouse. In fact, it all ran so smoothly that I spent 30 minutes maximum in 'official attendance', didn't need to appear before a District Judge or attend the Official Receiver's office.
Immediately after my morning in court, I went to my local Co-Operative Bank branch, informed them that I'm an un-discharged bankrupt and attempted to open up a basic Cashminder account. Within 5 minutes, I was told that I'd been accepted and given a sort-code/account number. However, after reading some stories on this site, I'm worried that they may write to me and reverse this decision.
The Official Receiver called me today for a quick pre-interview chat, and I'm booked in for a 15-30 minute telephone interview next week. This is the only worry I have now, as I've only got 3 months of statements and I can't really account for all the reasons I've got into this state, beside the fact that I lived beyond my means.
I was quite amazed when the Official Receiver agreed that my wages (paid into my bank account the day after my bankruptcy was ordered) could be withdrawn in full, ready for a new bank account to be set up. The account obviously wasn't frozen immediately, but now shows a nil balance.
Still worried about the Co-Op account, I gave them a call today, but was told that the account was still not set up. Incidently, NatWest confirmed today that they'll close my Current Account and give me a Step Account (Solo debit card) as they're not one of my creditors. So if all else fails!
Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to say thanks for everybody's great contributions on the forum, and re-iterate that a problem shared REALLY is a problem halved. Without this site/forum, I don't think I could've made it through.

Posted - 09 August 2008 : 13:11:52 Thanks for sharing that with us. I think that you will be okay with the co-op because they have already given you an account number. As you say, you have Natwest, so that should be a weight off your mind. Do let us know how your OR meeting goes as this is what worries pre-BRs the most. What were you allowed to keep etc and what you have to surrender/or lose.
Look forward to hearing from you next week.

Posted - 09 August 2008 : 06:46:31 Hello, im waiting to attend court with my papers. I was worried about my debts and had to pluck up the courage to tell the parents as they had no idea but thankfully were very understanding due to the fact that my marriage has just broken up as well. As i understand from posts on this site your bank statements should not be a problem as the OR will request them from your bank and they will look at them.I have just applied for a barcleys cashminder account and waiting to see if i get one cos i need to transfer wages into it as work have a cut off date for when this happen. Im hoping to go bankrupt next month and start a fresh life, but back with my parents as i cant afford to rent and mum wants to sort me out, good thing is they live in scarborough and i always wanted to live by the sea.
Hope this is ok and good luck |
