Hi, my wife and I are in a difficult and very stressfull situation financially.Over a period of 24 months we have suffered four bereavements, one being a very young member of our family.

Apart from the obvious sadness of our losses, these events caused us great problems financially. We had kept all our creditors informed of the situation from the onset but have now come to the end,we are getting phone calls non stop ,the arrogance of people such as Capital One,Barclaycard are unbearable.

Our main Creditor is Black Horse,in my wifes name a debt of £16250,However this week she received a CCJ,with costs which increased the amount to £17,100.I also have an account with Black Horse,a motorcycle which I travel to and from work on.The total amount payable to Black horse being £507,00 per month for a total joint patment figure of £507 per month.

We have asked Black horse since April this year to restructure our loans, they have totally ignored this request. On July 10th,I had the misfortune to collapse at home, was rushed into Hospital ander after many checks ,scans was informed I had "Viral Labrynthitus",a serious virus infection of the inner ear.

I was discharged after six days ,sent home and have been signed off work for as long as it takes me to recover.I have been off now nearly 5 weeks and have been told I need another month off as this virus can take a long time to heal.I am receiving £43.20 ,per weel incapacity benefit, reduced from ,£63.00 per week as I receive a Fire Service pension of £500per month.

We are struggling to survive, are contemplating going Bankrupt. We have an interest only Mortgage,a number of credit cards, our total joint debt is approx£33,000.One car is on hp,my motorcycle was purchased on a credit agreement and the house is in a negative equity situation.

Do you feel that Bankrupcy is the answer for us?

Finally ,the facts are ,a CCJ will run for six or more years,my wife is 54,I am 59,we feel that we don,t have much more to give,in fact I found my wife recently contemplating swallowing a bottle of tablets. If you could give us any advice we would be most gratefull

Thank YOU John

Hi John,
Just a very quick post to say welcome as I am heading out for the day.
I know its cheesy, but you really are among friends here. We too suffered the loss of our baby boy, which impacted greatly on our lives.
Please take care
Love Karen

hi john, please tell your wife that everyone on here understands exactly what she is going through. i went BR in april after years of struggling to pay my debts and getting hounded with phone calls, i even contemplated ending it all the same as your wife so i know where she is coming from. i had to sell my house after 25 yrs and of course i was upset at the time BUT now i think its the best thing i have ever done. when the phone rings now i dont jump and quiver which is the best feeling yet as you know that whoever it is on the other end is going to be friendly.
good luck in whatever you both decide on and remember keep your chin up you have done nothing wrong.
PS give your wife a big cuddle from me

Hi John and welcome to the forum. You will get loads of support and advice from this forum, so please stick around. I'm so sorry to hear about the terrible time you've had.

My circumstances are different to yours, but I ended up going BR in March 2007 and to be honest it was the best thing I could have done at the time. I've always enjoyed spending money (not that I ever really had any!) but it got worse after my dad died. I'm not using it as an excuse, but I know I was comfort spending. My relationship broke up a couple of days after my dad died, and I know I was comfort spending. The spending then became a habit - I felt down so I spent. It all came to a head in August 2006 when I realised that there wasn't any more credit and I had to do something. I tried an IVA, but that only lasted for 4 months as I couldn't afford it, so BR was the only option. BR wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected, and I appreciate the fresh start I've been given.

Good luck, and please keep posting x

Hi John
Your more than welcome and i can understand the thought of losing your home is unbearable. We will have to let ours go as there is equity in it and next year we wont be able to afford the repayments so that for us will be that.
Most of our debt has been added into this house and to be honest although it was very hard to swallow my pride and agree to the BR with hubby i just wanted to stay as a family and the house at the end of the day you cant take with you to the other side.
I hope that you and your wife do what you feel is right for you, there are many on here that are there to help and dont be affraid to air your views, what is it they say "A problem shared is a problem halved" and like you have said its not your fault, its all circumstances that have led to this.
You have many friends on here so just ask away and someone will always be able to offer you advice and share there experience, and John I went BR last week and i was terrified, but the members got me through and in the end i dont know what i was terrified about in the first place.
Take it in your stride, and remember we are all here for you.
Jo

Hello Jo,thank you for your most welcome comments and support. You have been through a lot yourself and as you saythere is always light at the end of the tunnel. We are desperately considering all the options ,going from one to the other,BR,at our time of life is terrifying, loss of house etc,but as I am still off work the whole situation is really worrying. The sad thing is these creditors are not interested in your wellbeing they just want money ,money, thanks again for your support ,John.

Hi John.G and Your Wife
I wish to welcome you to the forum, you will find it a great place and as many questions that you have will be answered.
I will tell you and others that although my circumsatances were slightly different to yours as in no bereavments the debts mounted and came to a head in May this year and I did start to take a number of pills to end my life, only to be found about 15mins later by my mum on her wedding anniversary. This for me was my wake up call. I have 3 children that adore me and i adore them, but I felt the only way that I could give them there debt free life back was to end it all, I thought it was all my fault that at the time we were indebt, that we bought the house and that my husband had left me. I only took a few and my mum stayed with me until I was over that but I was heart broken that hubby left me. I thought he did not love me anymore when infact its was, yes youve guessed it the DEBTS.
He came back, we talked and decided that Bankruptcy for us was our only option.
So on the 4th of August we did just that, we went Bankrupt.
Your not alone and whilst i can never say how you feel about your family history I can sort of relate to how your both feeling its your fault in some way. Beleive me there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and all the forum members here will give you that little boost and it will almost make you feel invincable.
Take care John and please keep posting. I hope that i have not sounded patrinizing to you, i dont tell people how it came about, I wanted to just forget it all but for us it brought the very big problem of the debts to light, i had dealt on my own for many years with the debts and now i could do it as a couple and not feel ashamed or like i was the only one.
LOL

Hi all
I have had the good fortune to speak at length to John about his current situation. Life has not dealt him much of a hand over the last 2 years or so and now finds himself unable to work for an, as yet, undetermined period.

One of the great things about the forum is the comfort and reassurance gained from the interaction of it's members.I know John and his wife would greatly appreciate as much advice, and as many comments, from forum members as possible.
