Can you please advise me, I have been in IVA however could not afford to continue payments and have now received a Certificate of Termination. Have made enquiries about making myself bankrupt and have been told that this is not a problem but would cost me £5000. This seems very expensive, can I do it as successfully myself and what costs will I incur.

Thank you.

Hi Colin
do you own your property and have equity?

Do you have a business or are you a director of a limited company?

If the answer to all of the above is no, then you can do all this yourself.

Otherwise you may need to take advice.

5 grand? is someone having a giraffe?
Colin,i went BR without a solictor and it cost me £495. how do they justify £4505 for filling out some forms?
you can do it all yourself, its not difficult just take your time ,read everything thoroughly,be honest ,check and double check and you will be fine.if there is something you dont understand on the forms or about process and procedure dont be afraid to ask,we've all been there.

Hi Colin,

I'm presuming the £5000 costs are for someone to fill in the forms etc for you. You can do this yourself online at www.insolvency.gov.uk . I and lots of others on the forum have done it this way and I personally haven't found it too bad (with the support of the forum!). If you choose to do it yourself, all you will need to pay is the £495 court fee on the day of your bankruptcy hearing.

I hope that is of some help. Keep posting and take care.
