Posted - 13 February 2010 : 14:56:27 Hi My ex-husband has just declared himself bankrupt having abandonned a house in joint both out names. I think he has left me with 60,000 worth of debt. I am self employed but not making a profit yet, and live in rented accomodation with my 3 kids paid by housing benefit.
I can't afford the bankruptcy fee so I think I will have to wait until one of the creditors declares me bankrupt.
Anyway, what happens to contracts for phone, internet etc? I am not arrears on anything and i need them for work. Can I keep them or will they have to be terminated?

Posted - 13 February 2010 : 19:25:06 Thanks.
We were divorced last summer and he declared 2 weeks ago after not paying the mortgage for 4 months and ignoring the joint debts. I have no assets and will owe 60000 once the house is repossessed and sold.
Now I am liable for the lot. Will have to try and find the money from somewhere I guess.
He has stiched me up really well after a year of abuse as well!
Will try talking to the CCCS on Monday.

how long had you been seperated before he declared BR ?
appreciate that the debts were joint so the creditors will probably look to you for recompense, it will take them about 3 months to start chasing you, i do not know who the creditors are / were but not many of them will elect to make you BR. and then they will only make you BR if they beleive that you have assests
speak to the local CAB and see if they can offer any solutions or guidance
good luck regards Richard
