Hi
Santander will let you open a cash ISA (Best buy in Money Mail) my wife and I have just opened one each even though one of my wifes creditors was Santander or Abbey as was. I also have an e saver account with them. All this can be done over the phone.

Hi,

RBS let me open a Direct Savings account upon discharge (good rate of interest), but Yorkshire Building Society let me open a Internet Saver whilst un-discharged (better rate of interest).

Hope this helps.

you could open a co-op isa account and put money in, this account is instant access too. thats what i did after my bankruptcy and i have a standing order set up and whenever i need money put into my cashminder account i just ring them and its put in my cashminder account straight away. hope this helps.

I went into co-op branch and filled all the forms out, took birth certificates of the children and everything. It was declined. Dont know why.

Pathtofreedom - eventhough they offered you a savings account - was it accepted??

Skippy - Nationwide offered me a current account but I turned it down as Im happy with my cashminder account and dont wanna go down the road of debt again. So even though they offered me an account, not sure if it would have been accepted. Im happy with my basic co-op and nawest accounts and please to have such a good friend to write me cheques when I need them :-)

Shelleyandrew, have you got a Nationwide current account? The reason I'm asking is that I know that they no longer offer accounts to bankrupts, and people who had ann account with them have been unable to upgrade.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

when we went into the co-op to set up our cashminder account, they offered us a savings account aswell. We had only been made bankrupt the day before.

Nationwide allow savings accounts with them either before or after discharge. Nationwide even offer current accounts after discharge. Co-op is a strange one, but glad they let me open a cashminder after going bankrupt.

Just phoned Santander with a general enquiry on opening a savings account having just been discharged. Not a problem, opened an e-saver acc over the phone with card and internet access to follow within 10 days.

The Co-op is a bit of a strange one. They will allow undischarged BRs a bank account but won't allow recently discharged BRs a savings account?!?!?

I think I have seen posts from other people saying that they are able to get a Co-op savings account once they have been discharged for 6 months but I am not 100% sure of this.

Give Santander a try and see what they say. If they refuse you could always speak to the Co-op and see if they do have a 6 month discharge rule.

Thanks for your comments
Will try with Santander first if no go theres always the cashminder
Skippy Posted - 24 February 2010 : 11:40:37
I opened a savings account with Abbey (now Santander) and I'm pretty sure I hadn't been discharged at that time.

hi and welcome to the forum
i know of no banks that will automatically give accounts to new customers that are BR or recently discharged (other than COOP Cashminder)
as the interest rates in savings accounts are so low at the moment most people opt for a second COOP cashminder account and use that for savings
