I am a student nurse, been told that this means if i go bankrupt, i wont be able to work as a nurse, is this true? also, if my partner goes bankrupt and i dont, will that affect my nursing career. thanks alot, debt free wannabe |

I am also an NMC registrant and a bankrupt. I took advice from the NMC itself prior to going bankrupt. The following link is the NMC's position http://www.nmc-uk.org/aDisplayDocument.aspx?documentID=4186 There is also a relevant piece of legislation 'The Nursing & Midwifery Council (Constitution) Order 2008' (Part 2, 5., (e)). When I approached the NMC directly they said that the order is only applicable to appointed member of the council. HTH. |

worth checking your terms of employment when you start work, however this clause is now quite old fashioned and unless your job was in the financial services industry I suspect that an employer wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

The key thing as always is get specific advice from a professional and understand all of the options and all of the consequences and how they specifically effect you.

HI
I am a nurse (not practicing) and i am a discharged bankrupt, I have never had problems renewing my registration with the NMC and havent had to inform the NMC.
The only time I have been asked is when I applied for a job in a nursing home as a deputy manager and you had some financial control
The only other time was agencies but nothing came of that.
I would check with HR and NHSBA Who if I am correct still run the bursary unit.
Also if your still a student nurse have a word with your tutor too

Check your HR team and your union.
I do know nurses that have been through BR unscathed.

The best thing to do is to check with your employer/HR department
I once had a nurse as a client who told me she would lose her job if she was made bankrupt, but she was more involved with budgets/finances than with "proper" nursing.
I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to work as a nurse but it's always worth checking first.
Your partner's financial position shouldn't have any effect on it

P.S. I understand the NMC has a code of conduct that refers to it but don't know what it says - my understanding is that registration would only be affected if the bankruptcy involved fraud or other criminal activities |
