Can anyone advise me if I have to inform the police about my bankruptcy, regarding my shotgun licence? Does the OR inform the police of all bankrupts??

Hi folks,

The poster is one of my clients so just to clear this up:

You don't need to inform the OR that you have a shotgun, unless the shotgun is of value. The Government Insolvency Service have confirmed this.

You don't need to inform the Shotgun icencing department that you have declared bankruptcy. The police chief in the firearms licensing department has confirmed this.

Just thought this might help for other posters.

What on earth has it got to do with the OR whether you have a shotgun? Apart from the possible value of it, I cannot see the connection and why the OR should know. Seems to me the OR wants to know everything. They'll want to know about our sex lives next.

Then you have nothing to worry about, so might as well tell the OR?

The £500 thing is not written in law, the law simply says that all of your assets vest with the trustee in bankruptcy, it is not the OR's choice. What the OR does have the choice of is how they are going to deal with them.

Thanks for your replies. In case any one else is interested, I did contact the Insolvency practitioner that is helping me with the BR, and they contacted the firearms dept. who said it was not relevant and they do not need to be informed. As for the OR, the gun is valued at less than £500 so is simply a personal belonging and doesn't need to be listed on that basis. I don't understand why the OR should suddenly become responsible for my guns or my behaviour!! I have sharp knives in the kitchen too; will he want to assume responsibility for them also?

If you have guns you need to inform the OR of this. The OR will becme responsible for the guns and so will need to do some checks, ie that they are secure and that you hold a valid licence. Therefore the OR will probably have sme contact with the police. If the OR deceides that they are not going to take them then the will inform the police of that fact, but that should not stop you from being able to continue to hold a licence

Tbh, I would ring & check. Better to sort this rather than sit & worry & you will probably find it's no problem anyway.

not that i am aware of
you could always speak to your local gun club without giving away your identity or your firearms sergeant at the police station.

RevivaUK and Paul Johns helped me through it all i can't recommend them enough!!
