Posted - 09 September 2010 : 16:02:08 Hello - Apologies for what is going to be long winded...
My wife and I have separated, with quite hefty debts of around £60k, including what is left over on a mortgage and secured loan, after voluntary repossession of our house.
We have not yet begun divorce proceedings, however I am now looking into these, after over a year of being separated.
I intened to go bankrupt in the very near future, and at this point, when the paperwork is all complete, a friend of mine is paying for me to leave the country for a year, joining him on his travels (yes, a very good friend!)
Due to this, I will be quitting my job and seeking work when I return. I cannot afford to quit before I go bankrupt, and so the timing will be just as I go bankrupt, I will be resigning.
My questions are this: 1) How will the divorce affect my bankrupcty - I believe my exwife is intending to go bankrupt as well.
2) How long on average will it take to hear from the OR after I go BR, and how do I handle to situation regarding leaving the country? Im aware it will probably be frowned upon, it seems like a luxury for someone to do after going BR but it has taken 18 months of hard persuasion from my friend for me to agree!

Posted - 09 September 2010 : 16:08:50 1) not at all as i presume that there are no significant assets to be divided.
2)It is not frowned upon, many people who go bankrupt use it as an opportunity to start again and go of in a totaly new direction. I wouldnt plan to go in the first couple of months as that is when most of the action happens, usually after that it is pretty quiet. All the OR expects is that you make yourself available and contactable when necessary so that they can complete their duties, what you do with your time apart from that is your own business |
