Myself and my husband were discharged in july with no ipa. We would like to try and save some money but not sure which bank will let us have a savings account. Any suggestions??

Now I couldn't get a Sainsburys savings account! They refused to open one unless I sent them an original certificate of discharge, which I didn't have, and no way was I paying £60 just to open a savings account.

I also heard that Sainsburys don't return the certificate, they destroy it when they've finished! How true that is I don't know, but I don't want to take a chance!

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 - it's over at last!

I was discharged on October 2009 and found it very difficult to get a basic savings account. I cannot understand for the life of me why discharged bankrupts cannot get a savings account, after all it's our money then, and there are no overdafts or loans involved. If someone could explain the logic behind this I would be grateful.

I already have a Co Op cashminder account for everyday expenditure. The Co op did offer an ISA and that was it. I opened a Sainburys savings account at an OK interest rate, plus double points on nectar card for anything you buy except petrol.

It's about time the banks relaxed their guidlines for ex bankrupts where savings accounts are concerned. We are not asking them for money, we just want to save it. Surley this must show that we are in more control of our own finances since going bankrupt, which should be encouraged.

Co-op were a nightmare for me - I had to appeal to get a savings account even though I had two Cashminder accounts!

Another one to try is Yorkshire Building Society - I had no problems with them.

You should try the Co-op, they do an easy saver account or Barclays if you can't get one with mainstream banks.
