Posted - 27 October 2010 : 16:48:30 I have been discharged from bankrupsy last month, i wanted to open a new bank account i tried Natwest but have asked me to produce a discharge certificate (it costs £70 to buy it from my court) i don't really want to spend £70 on a piece of paper so i thought i would try another bank. which bank would accept me without the certificate? thank you
btw HSBC, barclays, lloyds, rbs, mbna were previous creditors

If you do decide to get the discharge certificate make sure that the bank you provide it to will return it. I seem to remember Tracey mentioning that a bank she was applying for an account with (can't remember which one) wanted the discharge certificate to open the account and they also said they wouldn't return the certificate.

Congratulations on your discharge and I trust that the bankruptcy ordeal was not too bad. I agree with Paulgm and you may find it difficult at the moment. However applying for a Certificate of Discharge is not a bad thing - even although it costs £60 or £70. It is useful so that you can make and send copies to your creditors in order for them to update their records especially where your credit report is concerned.
All the best
