Posted - 06 November 2010 : 05:35:03 My husband and I have a court date of 10th Dec for BR, I have had mixed messages about the cashminder account with regards to when it should be opened... Are we better off waiting until after the 10th Dec or are we able to open one beforehand (afraid of it being frozen) |

Posted - 08 November 2010 : 21:15:19 Thanks both, really helpful as usual, I really don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found this forum, it's been my lifeline, so many questions, so little time. We have applied for the account but for some reason it's gone to a referral for a decision, will find out by the end of this week if we are successful.

Posted - 08 November 2010 : 20:46:25 we opened our account before BR (for an IVA in fact) we did list it on our statement of affairs but during the initial OR telephone contact we iterated that this was the account for our daily living expenses and therefore needed to remain open. I must say that despite being discharged for nearly 2 years, we have no intention of changing accounts as the co op offered us a fantastic service (internet and post office banking) and are non judgemental to the BR position, for this we will repay them with our loyalty. |

Posted - 07 November 2010 : 12:46:18 Hi Sarah, when I was an examiner, I never questioned why someone had opened a new account(e.g a cashminder account) prior to declaring themselves bankrupt. It is a perfectly sensible course of action to take, as by doing so, and transferring all your direct debits etc,you will be ensuring that you at least continue to be able to pay your bills ( i.e. gas, electric, mortgage, shopping etc).
The other point is that the OR/examiner realise that as long as the account is in credit, then you need it to receive salary/benefits etc, and so will not have any objection to it staying open. The OR may write to them stating this, but as you've already told the Co-op of your intentions, then it's not going to come as a surprise. So definitely open the account beforehand, as if you leave it until after, whatever bank you're with will generally close and freeze the account, and being close to Christmas it's the last thing you want!

Posted - 06 November 2010 : 21:55:31 Hi Sarah
Unfortunately mine was approved on the telephone at the time. The only query I had with them was why I wanted to open a cashminder account and not one of their other "award winning" current accounts.
I explained to them that I was intending to declare BR a few weeks later an they didn't have an issue with it.
It's hopefully something simple which should allow you to open the account.
The other BR friendly Back Account is the Basic Barclays Account. I owed Barclaycard as part of my BR and I didn't think that they would open an account for me. This was my reason for not applying to Barclays at the time but when I contacted them to inform them of my BR they offered me the basic account with no problems. If I hadn't already opened my account with the CoOP I would have probably used them.
Have a read of some previous post below, everyone seems to have different experiences of each of the banks and if there is anything specific you want to know, ask one of the forum experts.

Posted - 06 November 2010 : 15:05:44 Have just completed the application over the telephone and it didn't come back with a decision... did anyone else have this problem? I have to ring them back in the week and see if a decision has been made :S

Posted - 06 November 2010 : 14:31:05 Hello
I opened mine 4weeks before going to court. I transferred all my Direct Debits, Standing Orders and salary to this account.
I didn't list it on my SOA and I told the OR about this account during my Telephone interview. My Account was not frozen adn I have had no problem runing it. I also told the CoOP once the court had declared me BR so they could make a note on their records.
My dealings with the CoOp are that they have been the best Bank I have ever dealt with. Telphone Banking and Internet Banking are all first class and the people in Branch and at the end of the phone are friendly and professional. They understand the position you are in and they do all they can to help you with any problems you may have.
Good luck with everything. |

Posted - 06 November 2010 : 14:11:57 Hi Sarah myself and my husband are in court for BR on tues,we opened our cash minder accounts 2wks ago and have had everything through, although the bank card and pin did take a while. The best thing to do is a ring a branch local to you if you can. They'll do your applications over the phone and tell you if you need id or anything,we never needed to show anything and it was really straightforward!!! and as they are bankruptcy friendly they were really nice and not judgemental at all, unlike other banks!!If you havent got a branch near by try the customer service number they can also do applications over the phone. Hope this helps and good luck xxquote: Originally posted by Sarah Berry

Posted - 06 November 2010 : 08:01:03 There is no problem opening the account before your court date. Don't bother putting it on the SOA and when you speak to the OR they will probably ask about bank accounts and then you can mention the CashMinder account.
By not putting it on the SOA it reduces the chance of it being frozen. The Co-op used to be quite busy with people opening these accounts and, in my case, it took almost 3 weeks to get my account details though so if you apply now you may not get the account details in time to put them on the SOA anyway. |
