Me again! I'd really like to know if a bankrupt can be ordered to leave university in Scotland - either by a court, the Official Receiver or the university itself. Or if a payment of fees or rent made before going bust would be reversed by the OR.
I've been out of work for quite a while, and I have debts of about £10,000, but I am now working and paying them off. It will take me about 18 months to be debt free, if I stay in my current fulltime job - which would mean deferring uni until 2012.
My first choice uni is Glasgow Caledonian, and I am a Scottish resident so my fees are still low. Because I've been at uni before, I will have to pay my first year's fees in cash (about £1200 because I won't be charged the "top-up" to £1800) and support myself by working part-time until I can get a student loan in the second year. I should just about manage that without more borrowing, but I won't have any spare income to pay my old debts.
The problem is that if I defer until 2012 when I will be debt free, by then I think the Scottish fees will have risen substantially. Perhaps to the same level as in England. I would never have any chance of paying £6000+ in cash when I enrol. I'm sure you can see my dilemma...
I am looking at the Open University too, but its fees will also rise for 2012. Nobody knows by how much. And if the OU becomes part of the main student loan system, I would have to pay fees upfront that year because of my previous study.
Any comments welcome, even on the lines of "get back to work you lazy @#]*7%!". I don't want to go bust if I can avoid it, but spending the rest of my life in dead-end jobs because I'm uneducated would be worse, I think. |

If you've dropped out previously you may find it difficult to get on a course cos everyone is going to scramble for places before 2012 anyway. Why not apply, see if you get offered a place & then take it from there? |
