I opened an account with the Co-op it was a basic account with a debit card, which allows you to pay your bills, they were fine about it, obviously you will not get an overdraft and thats for the best really anyway, you just need to be honest with them, make sure things are paid on time and this will help.

In terms of getting a mortgage, I have friends who work in banks and they informed me that people are able to obtain a mortgage within three years of being discharged, once agin being upfront befroe they do a credit search helps as well as an explanation and providing you weren't reckless with your finances prior to bankruptcy as in my case I was made redundant and found a job on half the pay and my wife left me leaving me with all the bills which I just couldn't do.

there will be those that wont give you a mortgage but if you try a few places you may be in luck the important thing to bare in mind is to tell them about your bankruptcy before any credit search.

hope this helps

Jan is right, you may have a problem getting a full current account until the BR has dropped off your credit file.

You need to check all three credit agencies, Experian, Equifax and Callcredit, and make sure no defaults are registered after the date of your BR. You can get some good advice and template letters from the following link:

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

HI Sean

Paul Johns and Tracey (skippy) have excellant blogs or fact sheets that can be down loaded

go on line to experian / equifax have a look at all of your creditors and establish who shows bad credit.

Mortgage Yes will be a challenge in current market for perfect credit history, the higher the deposit the easier it could be.

Keep track of the forum as you may have answer to this question and link in due course

Hi and welcome.

Your BR will remain on your file until 6 years after it was granted so this is likely to prove a stumbling block at the moment.

As long as you maintain your bank account and things such as mobile phone contracts in credit then this will help.

Buckle your seat belt Dorothy, 'cos Kansas is going bye bye.
