Hello,
I just thought I'd share my experience today with you.
I (used to) bank with HSBC. Before my bancruptcy a few days ago,I had been to a meeting with them to see how my account with them would stand considering the forthcoming BR. The first person said it would be OK. Then he said he'd better make sure and consulted the computer. The computer said "no" so he checked with his boss. Hiss boss also said "no".
So what happened next?
I relayed this information to the OR, and he recommended that I deplete the account of all available money asap, which I did, leaving £3.50 in the account.
HSBC wrote to me on Friday saying my account had been frozen and I had seven days to take out what I had left. Upon visiting the branch today they made me feel really bad. I was pushed from pillar to post, and the staff, although being polite like they should be, made me feel like some sort of outcast. Like, thinks 'get out of my bank, you scum', sort of thing. And then to top it all, the customer services lady said "You know once your BR is discharged, you can get a basic account with us". I politely said thank you and left. I really felt like saying and doing stuff that I cannot repeat here.
Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Keep a track on all transactions Widge as there can be a three day delay on updating your account on-line for debits...credits usually go on instantly.

My new co-op cashminder account is up and running now. Thanks for the info re: direct debits Moody - I'll make sure they come out just after pay day! I've registered for telephone and internet banking so I should be able to keep a regular check on my balance to make sure it won't go overdrawn.

Prior to becoming BR I was with the Halifax and decided after advice from this site to change to the Coop. If fact the Coop were one of my creditors on a Visa card...they even used the same Pin number and memorable name to activate it !! But just a word of warning .....the Coop don't like you going overdrawn on this account...I believe they give you three chances then your account is closed. Any direct debits to be paid on the Monday of the week should have sufficient credit to cover them by 9 pm on the Friday. This caught me out as until then I used to pay into the Post Office on a Saturday.

Halifax totally embarrassed me in the branch when I went in to withdraw the final £34 from my account and close it down, only to be told that the money was gone towards my £20k+ debt! I bet that made a really big dent in it!

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

Oooh Widge, poor you.

That is something that you really don't need at this time!

I hope that you have everything sorted out now?

Hi,
The most hostile bank towards bankrupts or thinking of it are HSBC and the Halifax,the number of people I had on the phone in tears because their accounts had been frozen, are too numerous to mention.

HSBC are well known for closing accounts from people who are bankrupt or in an IVA. They actively trawl the Insolvency Register.
