I am 24 years old and several years ago took on my ex partners debts of £18k, I didn't intend to do this however I know I have to take responsibility for my debts. I have ignored it for a while and paid a little off however I see no way I can pay these debts off. I earn on average £900 per month and live with my parents so rent a room from them for £100 a week. That leaves me with £500 which is then split between Petrol (for work), Car insurance, Car Tax, Telephone bill, gym membership (needed for health reasons), food etc. I can borrow the money to apply for bankruptcy from a close friend of mine, do you think I would qualify?

Bankruptcy could be an option for you then. However there are other solutions out there.

Visit www.iva.com for a list of companies and reviews and give one or two a ring. The advice is free and impartial and they will help you.

Alternatively, contact one of the experts on here.

Hi there, sorry I've had no internet access!
The debts were paid off in Loans in my name which means I have the 18k now in my name.

Thanks for your help x

We need the OP to come back and tell us the full story.

Perhaps the OP took out loans in her name to help out the partner?

Hi Samantha,

Sorry you've been left with the debt, as Jan and Blackie have said, if the debts are yours then bankruptcy may be an option.

I advise you speak to an expert to chat through all of your options.

If the debts are in your name then you can declare bankruptcy.

Hi both,

The debts are in my name. Thanks for your help and advice xx

I would have thought that if the debts were in your ex partners name that he would have to take responsibility for them now.

As Blackie says, can you give us some more information please.

Hiya Samantha.tt

I am not too sure what you really mean by you taking on your ex partners debts. Are all the accounts in question in your name or did you offer to pay these debts although they remain in his name? If you can clarify this point, it makes life easier.

If the debts are in your name, there should be no difficulty with you petitioning for your own bankruptcy. You have no assets and your liabilities are about £18,000.

Please do come back to clarify the position.

All the best
