How do I get proof I was discharged? It was a long time ago (around 2003) and I have forgotten which court was involved. |

Yes, it surprised me too. I've been with my current bank (RBS) for ten years (my salary goes into an easy access savings account), so I arranged an interview to get a current account and maybe a credit card. But it's all computerised: any bankruptcy, no matter how long ago, means instant rejection. The only recourse is to then start an appeals procedure using a certificate of discharge.
Needless to say, my opinion of banks has not changed much in the last ten years. I have always been very cautious with money, and the original bankruptcy was purely down to bank incompetence (long story). If I could survive without banks I would, but sadly in the modern online world a lot of services depend on you having a current account and credit card. |

I am surpised that, after all this time, you are still having trouble. I am at a bit of a loss as to why you need to prove to the banks that you were discharged from bankruptcy eight years ago. Everything will now be archived and your credit file should not be showing any details of your bankruptcy. You are not obliged to tell anyone of the fact that you were bankrupt, unless specifically asked.

yep there are soe bankrucies tht have been going on for at least 11 years and counting |

Glad you found it.
I don't know if that would be enough or not. Some bankrupts aren't discharged after that length of time if they've not complied with the order.
It may be that you have to pay to get proof that you are discharged.

Found it at last! I had about given up hope! I love you! I was starting to think I had imagined the whole bankruptcy thing.
Next question: would this be enough to prove to most banks that my bankruptcy began on that date?
And if so, would that be sufficient proof that the bankruptcy must now be over? I mean, if it began eleven years ago surely I don't need to pay a fortune to prove it has now expired? |

Have you tried the Edinburgh Gazette? I think Scottish BRs are listed there.

Thanks. I have an unusual name, but cannot find it in the archive search at the London Gazette. Am I searching wrong? it is possible that the bankruptcy happened in Scotland (our house was repossessed in England, but we were living in Scotland when it happened), and I've searched aib.gov.uk but can't find anything. Any other suggestions? |

Hi,
You could check in the London Gazette to find out which court it was as all bankruptcy is noted in there.
You would then need to apply to that court for a copy of the discharge and this will cost you £70.
