Hi
Went bankrupt two weeks ago along with my husband. I have a car worth no more than £1000 and will need it when I commence midwifery training in September. The OR is saying that it is not exempt and they may auction it off even though it would probably only fetch £400 at the most. I will not be able to commence training without my car due to placements and unsociable hours. HELP what can I do.

Hi,
as Melanie said, ask to speak to the AOR who is the examiner's line manager. The case for the car being exempt is that although not used for employment at the moment, having the use of the car will enable to complete the training, and hence have better job prospects. It's the same exemption basically that is given to someone who is unemployed, i.e. if they have a car they have a better chance of securing employment.
Also, a car at £1,000 could actually end up costing the OR money to deal with it once they've paid off agents etc.

Hello there
First off, Don't panic!
Contact your OR and fully explain your situation and circumstances. I'm sure they would be accommodating, if your explained your situation. Failing that, if your Examiner refused to exempt the vehicle - ask to speak with his Assistant Official Receiver (AOR) and put your argument/concerns to them - i'm sure you'll end up being ok, but it is up to you to 'justify' the need for the vehicle
