I was made bankrupt in April 2010. Since then I have only ever had contact from the insolvency practitioner once, and that was within the first two months of becoming bankrupt. How do I know if my bankrupcty has been discharged and/or who could I contact to find out ?

Your bankruptcy will stay on there for six years from the date you declared. What you can do is find out if there are any defaults registered after that date and if so, contact the creditors and tell them to amend the date back to when you were declared bankrupt.

You will need to contact all three agencies, Call Credit, Experian and Equifax to see what they hold on you.

As to rebuilding your rating, keeping things like a mobile phone contact, bank account, in order will help.

You could apply for a credit card such as Vanquis. High APR as they do give cards to people with bad credit history but if you use it sparingly and pay it off every time then that will all help.

You will be alright

Thanks for the answers guys. Just had a look on the 'Online Insolvency Register' and am not on there. Now just to get a copy of my credit report, which I take it that my bankruptcy is going to stick out like a sore thumb. Any idea's on how to go about rebuilding one's credit rating.

Hello Max,

I would assume that if you were declared bankrupt in April 2010 and this was the date of the court hearing, then you will automatically have been discharged in April 2011 after the 12 month bankruptcy period. Unless during that period, you were under instruction to make IPA payments, then these would continue for a period of 3 years. However, if you heard nothing, then I think it is safe to assume you will not be paying any IPA payments and you can now consider yourself debt and bankrupt free. Your name only remains on the online register while you are in the 12 months bankrupt period and therefore it is highly unlikely you are still on there. Like you, I only had one direct correspondence with the OR's office (nb. not the actual OR) directly after my petition for bankruptcy just to quickly discuss my reasons for bankruptcy. After that I had no other contact with the OR's office, so I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Enjoy!

Hi Max.23.
We too heard nothing from the OR after the initial calls. We have recently had contact as we have just purchased the BI but nothing else.
You can find your BR status on the 'Online Insolvency Register' (type it in your search engine) It is then just an easy search to point you in the right direction.

Do keep an eye on the register as you will need to print it off within a period of time (The experts will know how long) before it disappears off the register.

Good Luck.
