I think it rather unfair that after the pain of bankruptcy I have been temping for the Met Police. But today my Vetting Clearance was refused because of the bankruptcy. The police is they cannot consider you again for temp work until you have been DISCHARGED for 3 YEARS. I don't see the connection if you couldn't find work which is why I went bankrupt why are you again before refused a Vetting Clearance (which without) this you can't work for them. Very unfair. |

I'm not impresses! I've just gone onto Directgov and checked the retirement age and they've moved the goalpoasts again so I'll be just over 65 and you'll be just under 66. Wouldn't mind but its not been that long since I last checked! Apologies for giving you some gen.

But if people are better off on a state pension and can claim all the other benefits on top. Why are all the pensioners saying they are starving and can either pay fuel bills and NOT EAT or eat and NOT PAY FUEL BILLS? I am confused? Where are all these benefits for them?? It is rather puzzling. As all the pensioners are saying they have no money. A pensioner in the supermarket picked up 4 pork chops and then put them back saying if I buy these I won't be able to afford anything else to go with them. A business man was so shocked standing next to her he paid for her 4 pork chops at the checkout? What is going on?? |

I was born end of November 1954. Someone said it is now 66, but you believe 63? Is that definite?? |

I completely agree xmas baby. I pay quite a lot into my pension each month but it'll be worth next to nothing when I retire. If I didn't bother and relied on the state to keep me I'd probably be better off!
And to really rub salt in the wounds, we've changed our pension provider at work recently and because I transferred the old pension pot across it's lost quite a lot in fees! It'll be better in the long run, but it's annoying all the same!

To be honest, I have been looking into pensions and I have come to the conclusion that work pensions are a bit of a con. If you are only on a basic state pension you are probably most likely to qualify for lots of government benefits, whereas if you also have a works pension and are 'just' above the basic line, then you are not likely to receive any benefits, even though you are more or less as poor as those on a basic state pension. My pension would be okay when I retire at 65 if I had paid off my mortgage and don't have to pay anything like that, but as it is, I will still be renting when I retire and there is no way I will be able to afford it on my pension. I wish I didn't have one now. At least I would be able to claim all the benefits that go with not having a decent pension set up.

The worst of it is I am also judged on my age.
The fact that I am 57 makes it ten times worse. I still can't retire until 66 as the pension age retirement has also gone up. I only have the state pension to rely on.
If this were 1888 ... how did those poor people live back then. Mind you there were lots of servant jobs in rich households. |

I really feel for you Angie - it is unfair that those of us trying to sort out our debt should be penalised.

Basically, the Temp Agency has now found out about the Vetting Refusal and have now blacklisted me. So its back on the dole again! Why am I seen as a bad person when I couldn't get any work for a year and that's why I declared B. Nice for these people to judge me when they all have permanent jobs. |

I agree that it is stupid but those are the rules for a lot of police forces nationwide, regardless of the role you undertake.
My own force has currently been advertising vacancies internally for my field of expertise and financial vetting is one of the criteria required.
No point me applying for any of those.
I think that if you are already employed you may be ok - just don't bother applying for another position, or try applying from the outside.

Most forces won't consider you for any role until you've been discharged 3 years, not just clerical staff.

Having completed bankruptcy procedures for several front line police officers of the West Yorkshire police who are still fighting crime some still undischarged this is just plain stupid that clerical staff are affected in this way. |

There is no connection but the rules are the same for both police officers and police staff in most forces these days. You have to have been free from either an IVA or BR for three years before they will take you on.
I agree that it is totally unfair - you are a better bet than a lot of their other staff who are probably still deep in debt but done nothing about it yet.

Unfortunately the police force is the same nationwide. Nothing you can do about it, whether it is unfair or not.
