Christopher called, he would like some advice with regards to a Magistrates fine. This was from last year for watching TV without a license and he was set up on a payment plan. On the 9th March he received a letter dated the 6th March saying that he still owed £20, he paid it on the 12th March on the interest, he has an email confirmation and a it is showing on his bank statement that it has gone out. This morning he has received a letter from a bailiffs company, dated 21st March, advising him that the amount is still outstanding and the total is now £105. He is slightly worried because he has paid the outstanding £20 and the letter states that they can add charges at any time and force entry to his property. He is also worried because the orginal letter gave himten working days to pay the fine, in which he did, but that takes the dates to the 20th March and the letter from the bailiff was dates the 21st March and he thinks there might be a problem with this. He has contacted the bailiff and they are closed.

Hi Christopher,

Sounds like you need to contact the Court. If the fine is all paid up, the Court should call the bailiffs off. If there is still money owing, try paying the Court straight away. The bailiffs then have no reason to collect the outstanding amount.

They may still claim you owe them money, but they have no powers to enforce this, and it depends also on whether they were instructed correctly in the first place.

Hi Christopher,

Speak to the baillifs on Monday, if you have the paperwork to prove that it is paid then you should be able to sort this out.

Follow through
Make your dreams come true
Don't give up the fight
You will be alright
'Cause there's no one like you in the universe
