Posted - 16 April 2012 : 20:02:48 I have been contacted by bailiffs for an unpaid fine. They put a letter though the door and have posted another to me saying they would be calling with a locksmith to seize goods. Can they gain acess this way ? Can I pay back what I owe through the courts ?

Posted - 17 April 2012 : 10:56:06 Hi Collins
If you owe money on a court fine bailiffs are technically allowed to do this, but they are more likely just to try and push their way in at the front door because it doesn't cost them anything.
You can try making a payment to the court of the original amount owed, but you are likely to have to pay the full amount. If the court accepts you may still owe the bailiffs money, but they have no special powers to collect their own charges if the underlying debt has been paid.

Posted - 17 April 2012 : 08:24:53 Hello there, and a warm welcome to the forum, with regard to your query, I strongly suggest that you get in touch with the company via the information provided on the letter and have a chat with them.
Are you in a position to pay the debt, or come to an arrangement to repay the debt? If so, only they will be able to help, though they may advise you that they cannot help, in that they have been instructed to collect the debt and refer you direct to the original creditor to whom you owe the money to speak to them regarding repayment.
With regard to laws relating to what a bailiff can and cannot do, the best advice I can give is for you to go to the Citizens Advice Bureau website which has a very helpful section on bailiffs.
Don't though ignore the letter, this is something you need to act upon as soon as possible
If you are not in a position to pay this debt, and are considering bankruptcy, please contact myself or one of my fellow experts via the 'experts tab' on the left hand side of the screen, and either of us will be only too happy to help you further
Hope this helps, Melanie
