I’m new to the forum; I’ve had to join because I’m in dire need of advice. I’m bankrupt because basically I was a stupid 23 year old idiot who allowed herself to be taken for a ride financially by a manipulative ex - I am not blaming her, I’m blaming myself for being so naive. In blaming I mean taking responsibility - not in a self pitying way. im due to be discharged may 25th 2012 but the IPA is tough. I’ve been lucky in some respects to be allowed the degree of expenditure I have been, but it never seems enough, it always seems to run out before I’ve got round to getting everything I need. I guess before things went pear shaped with my ex I enjoyed a decent lifestyle. nice clothes & quality food! so I’m really struggling to swap next for Primark, and Smart Price food - really is £40 per month a realistic figure for clothing? Please someone tell me because maybe I need a reality check. £40 does not buy quality items. it buys cheap clothes that last all of 3 washes and give up?Anyway, I digress; my question is what happens after I’m discharged. How do I build my credit rating? Does the cash plus card really help? After 6 years will I be able to get credit just as easy as the next person? I’m thinking in the future. I guess I’d like to think me and my new partner will buy a place together and have a mortgage. But realistically will this even happen. Also I was wondering is there a guide anywhere that I can access to ensure I am getting my full entitlements for my expenditure. I’m j feeling hopeless. The only thing that makes this feeling go away is to just not think about my bankruptcy, but of course I cannot escape it its always there! Thanks in advance. Vicki, 28

there are no allowances as such, you need to work out what you and your family actually need to spend and tell the OR that

Your bankruptcy will remain on your file for six years from the date it started so at the moment you just need to keep your bank account/mobile phone account - anything like that in order.

Once the BR drops off your record then you can start to apply for things like a mortgage but it will take time and you're likely to need a big deposit. Bear in mind as well that if you are asked on a form in the future if you have ever been bankrupt you will have to answer yes.

As regards your allowances - I've no idea what they are set at in bankruptcy but you are able to buy clothes cheaply - I wear £5 trousers from Asda for work and they have lasted me a couple of years.

Try Ebay - they have excellent bargains on there.

Follow through
Make your dreams come true
Don't give up the fight
You will be alright
'Cause there's no one like you in the universe
