I am considering going bankrupt. My wife and I have a joint bank account, would my wife still be able to use it even if I am not?

Your wifes sole accounts will be fine and un touched.

Bankruptcy is an individual affair, but have a serious think about unlinking anything that is joint to make life easier.

Your wife's account should be fine if she isn't going BR.

Ascend may you find no resistance
Know that you made such a difference
All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you again

Thanks very much for the replies.

The account is with RBS. It is not a creditor.

My wife has another account with Nat West which has a card and for which she has set up online banking, can they not touch this?

Hi Malcolm, and welcome to the forum.

I think realistically you have 2 options.

1. Both of you open new seperate accounts.
2. Open up your own new account, and have your name removed from the joint account effectively making it your wifes sole account.

It will probably make life a lot easier for you if you do end up going ahead with Bankruptcy. At least you would have your wifes account unaffected, usuable for day to day banking, should you end up with a hiccup with your own account, however brief that may be.

Let us know how you get on.

Is this bank a creditor? Which bank is it?

I would suggest that your wife opens an account in her own name so that her credit rating isn't affected (unless of course you have joint debts)

Ascend may you find no resistance

All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you again
