Posted - 28 September 2012 : 16:06:48 Hi
I have a more general question: What is a good way to improve my credit score. The day of my official bankruptcy is 3 years ago and I am looking for ways to slowly get a better credit rating.
Thank you very much!

Posted - 30 September 2012 : 19:41:01 Simular to me. I went to barclasys for a very basic account got turned down - went to Natwest ended up with premier gold. They closed it down 2 weeks later because I owed money to RBS.. I had no diea they were linked. |

Posted - 30 September 2012 : 08:25:33 Nationwide refused me a full flex account some time ago - I walked across the road to Barclays and got a full account complete with credit card two hours later as I was top of their lending criteria! |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 21:47:49 Credit scores have always been hit and miss. Years ago I had a perfect credit score and First Direct wouldn't let me open an account as I failed the credit check. Shortly afterwards Natwest gave me a huge loan!
I think it's important that people put their own opinions across as that gives anyone reading something to think about. Personally I wouldn't touch a prepaid credit card as they are so expensive many have hidden charges. I would only suggest a Vanquis card if you plan to pay it off every month due to the high interest.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 and I'm now looking forward to getting married in September 2012 - I'm proof that you can go BR and come out the other side. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 21:45:33 Another way not many people know about. Is to go onto Tesco PAYG. After 12 months they will let someone go from PAYG to contract based on their top up history. Again it's their criteria but they look for people who top up the same amount (or more than original amount) per month and people who top up before or on their anniversary date. I just asked a friend of mine whos deals with customer vetting as I had heard a whisper but was not sure. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 21:39:18 Hello.
Try a mail order account such as very or jacamo. Mine started off at £90 limit and is now £2k ( not that i would ever go that high) mob phone also helps. Tesco should let u have a sim only rolling month contract and after 3 months are happy to let you upgrade to handset / longer contract as long as you have paid up on time. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 19:52:49 pcoventry - I don't stamp on peoples ideas.
Just pointing out that credit scores don't mean a lot these days regardless of where they come
Credit scores mean nothing - each creditor has their own crit4ria

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 18:20:28 Yes we know this. but stop stamping on peoples ideas. Just because you don't agree does not make it wrong for everyone.
The cashplus card DOES update your credit file prepaid OR not!. So just let them decide! |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 15:09:42 Prepaid cards aren't credit cards as you have to load them with money before you can use them.
With regards to cards such as Vanquis - as long as you use them carefully and pay them off every month then there won't be a problem. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 14:29:53 What you do is totally your decision.
I won't be getting any sort of card, prepaid or credit once my IVA is finished - then again I'm an old git and will be on pension so unlikely to get anything. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 14:26:03 Thanks for all your replies! I was thinking of applying for a prepaid credit card anyway. I found an overview on moneysupermarket here: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/prepaidcards/ The cash plus cards don't have a monthly fee, wouldn't it be better to take a pay monthly card like this one: http://www.tuxedoprepaid.com/prepaid-card/comparison-tool/ I don't feel comfortable getting a "real" credit card again as it got me into this mess. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 14:24:16 Your right - the rule is 3 or more in 6 months is a flag. I used to be quite an expert on my credit file until the poo hit the fan for me.
But your score does mean something. But i've had a very very low score on my credit side but had max on my landlord/letting side. Not many people know that exists. I would recommend checkmyfile.com as you get all 3 + your landlord/letting score too for their monthly fee. |

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 08:45:23 As far as I am concerned, credit scores mean nothing. Mine was 999 last time I checked and that's with an IVA still on file!
Lenders tend to look at your credit, such as have you taken credit in the last 6 months, are you up to your limit on credit cards and overdrafts, are you on the electoral role etc.

Posted - 29 September 2012 : 08:28:44 Bear in mind as well that credit scores are not all they are cracked up to be as lenders use their own criteria as I have found out in the past.
