my husband (we are separated) has been made bankrupt and I have assisted him to do this. he was living with his mother but the receiver wold not allow him to pay the rent as it was to a family member so it was deducted from him expenditure. he is now going to rent the property we lived in However if we do get back together and we live in my house - which I have owned for 13 years. Can he put down half of the bills as expenditure or as the house is in my name - he is not officially responsible to pay them? |

Unfortunately you can't have an allowance for presents.

Hi Julie,
Yes, he can contribute to the household bills, as long as they are fairly shared. If you both earn the same amount of money, then you can split them 50/50.

Hi,
thanks for the email.
The house is mine - it is not joint ownership.
I think he should contribute to half of the bills/mortgage if he lives here.
that was my question. sorry if it was not clear.
of course we would advise the receiver of this - I alsolet my ex use my car as long as he paid the bills to run it.
the receiver would not let him do this and deducted the figure from his expenditure.
this is the reason I am asking if he pays towards the household bills - will it be accepted?
his solicitor advised or recommended what to put on the expenditure form - a lot of what he had put on has also been deducted such as birthday presents/Christmas for his 12 year old daughter - he was told this is not essential!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
He will have to inform the Official Receiver that he is renting out the joint property and bear in mind that the receiver will keep an interest in the property for two years and three months.
As to your house, would your husband be paying anything towards the expenses? If not then he will have to pay all of his disposable income (if it's over £20)to the bankruptcy for three years from the date of declaration.
