Hi all, just wondering if anybody has had experience of trying to be an additional cardholder on someone elses credit card whilst being an undischarged BR? The reason I ask is that I turn 30 next year, and the folks are treating me and my other half to a small holiday in Europe. Whilst there, we'll need to rent a car (i'm the only driver) and check into a hotel - both of which require a credit card in the customer's name. Cheers, T.

Hi Zamfir,

As your dad is solely liable for the debt irrespective of who the additional cardholder is and their status, I can't see an issue in law. As always, it's at the bank's discretion.

Thanks for your response Julian - My dad has a Credit Card with Lloyds (one of my creditors) and my other half with Mint (not one of my creditors).

Do you think I'd be credit-checked for it and/or run into problems when applying?

Thanks, T.

Hi Harbourmaster,

Pre-paid cards are not credit checked, so you should be ok (I got mine shortly after going BR with no problems).

Zamfir, it should depend on how much the online authorisation is for. As long as there are sufficient funds loaded onto the card, you should be ok. However, I don't see an issue with you being an additional cardholder on someone else's account as you are not legally liable for the debt anyway.

Also worth noting that some Car Hire companies take an embossed copy of the card (Prepay & Electron cards are no good), and some just take an online authorisation (most Prepay cards won't allow this).

If, lets say, someone had a bit of cash to load onto a prepaid credit card........
Could the OR find out that you have it!!!!

Hi there - good question! I suppose the cardholder is the card owner and responsible for the debt but it gives you access to more than £500 of credit whilst you are undischarged......a BR assist expert will need to answer this! I wonder if they credit check additional card holders??
You could get a pre-paid card but will obviiously needs to load it with enough money to cover the deposit the car hire company want to secure with the card.
