Posted - 14 October 2008 : 12:52:18 Hi
We went BR on 24/06/2008 and at the time gave the OR a list of all our accounts . As advised at the tiem we opened a new account with a bank we had no debt with (barclays). However just before BR i recieved a letter from my Morgan Stanley credit card advising me that they were transferring my debt to Barclays so we quickly opened a basic Electron card with CO OP bank, however we are having not having a cheque book and the oppurtunity to have Standing orders and direct debits. As co op put a restriction of these on the acc.
Anyway to get to my point , i have today spoken to Barclays whom say the account is still open and active and i can openly use it if i want to. Its a joint acc with my husband so would be ideal if we could.
I have called my OR to ask if this is ok but shes out the office until 2pm , so just thought id ask for your advice etc?
The guy on the phone siad there was no record of me having any debt with themselves ect
Could Barclays still freeze my account after me using it for a few months or not?
Any help appreciated

Posted - 14 October 2008 : 16:02:25 Hi Skippy im under that impression too that as BR we are allowed only a basic account with a cp card or electron card and thats about it till discharge.

Posted - 14 October 2008 : 15:16:33 As far as I'm aware you're not allowed to write a cheque while you're BR.
You may find that Barclays won't issue you with a debit card - I sent my Lloyds debit card to the OR and when I discovered that I could still use the account Lloyds would only send me a cash card, not a debit card.
Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

Posted - 14 October 2008 : 13:40:18 Hi Need a friend
Thanks for your quick response.
The cashminder account i have with the co op isnt allowing me to have any standing orders or DD as i went overdrawn accidently by a direct debit , so yes is my own fault but i didnt know my dd was for a largewr amount so hadnt put enough money in to cover it . So co op has restricted the acc so and dd for 3 months.
My Barclays account is a normal cheque book visa debit accountbut doent have an overdraft (nor do i want one!) and yes that was wahat i was asking whether it was safe to use my barclays account.
I will have to wait for new cards and pins etc as we posted old ones to OR

Posted - 14 October 2008 : 13:11:50 Hi there
I have just read your post and from what i understand from that is you are wondering if you should use your Barclays account. I would say yes that should be ok as like you have said they have not closed it yet and really they should not be able to take monies from there for old debts, as for the Coop the basic account does not have a cheque book but should allow for so and dd's so i dont know why they would have put a hold on that for you, i would call them and double check which account you have and querie it with them.
Just remeber that its the banks that close accounts and not the OR. So at then end of the day it would be down to Barclays to decide whether it would stay open or not, if its a basic account with no cheque book or overdraft then i would say you should be safe.
Best of luck
