As title suggests, got the funds for both myself and my wife to finally go bankrupt as planned. Both sets of forms completed online waiting to be printed 3 times each.

Some concerns: Spoke to Barclays today who confirmed that as soon as they hear confirmation of the bankruptcy, the account(s) (current, savings, our newborn son's) will all be immediately closed, not frozen.
We're going to Abbey in the next town this weekend to open a child trust fund account for our son with which to put in the £250 the government give him. We were going to speak to them also about opening a basic account.

However, it strikes us that without any form of debit card, we'll be unable to use Ebay or buy anything online. This is a big of a downer as there are some articles I can't buy locally and require as part of day to day living. They can only be sourced online. We're a little concerned about getting a Co-op account as there isn't one for miles and miles, although it seems this may be our only choice.

Thought about making just myself bankrupt and waiting for November for this new debt management thing to come into effect for my wife, but if we do this one of the major creditors of circa £5k will merely be transferred to her name, being a joint account. So that's another idea out of the question.

On income, can I assume that all Child Benefit and Tax Credit remains untouched? In our view it is our son's money and pays for nappies, food and clothing therefore shouldn't be of the OR's interest. Can anyone confirm/disconfirm this?

we have the coop cashminder account too, i have had no real problems with it, like the online banking and the fact that we can still set up direct debits.

hi syn
i was hoping to be able to add something realy enlighting to this thread but i can not all i can say is that i am very happy with my co-op acc and i find it easy to use i lkie the online banking as it makes it easier to keep an eye on things

Hi Syn

The child trust fund account i would have thought would be safe, but it would be better if you mention this to the OR at time of interview.

I would say if its in your name you would have to include on the SoA and also add a note on section 13.

Thanks

Take Care

Just a thought, would the child trust fund account be alright as it is effectively in our control?

Hi Syn

I must admit i do agree with regards the banks not letting br people have accounts, as we are quite low risk afterall !!

hi syn, you've hit the nail on the head there my friend...banks are only interested in the denero!
what other reason could there be to not let someone who is br have an account, as far as i can see there is no way someone with a br order can be high risk if they dont throw overdrafts, loans etc, at us, which is, in effect part of the reason we're all here....good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers folks, looks like the co-op account may well be the way to go. I like to have a good control over my accounts and online banking facilities + electron card are a definite bonus. I fail to see why other banks are less happy to give BR people accounts, unless of course because they're not likely to incur charges for the bank to make even more profit :)
Cynical in my old age!

Hi GT

Why not meet up with them, it may be a good thing, make new friendss, put names to faces as some post on there and also on here.

You just take it easy and try not to worry, it will be the best thing you could have done in ages and once you have the BR number your life will be free again and you can start afresh. :-)

LOL

I am feeling quite positive at the moment, but as I said in my other post there is only my ex and my mom and you lot (lol) who know about it so you wouldnt believe the excuses I have come up with to get out of things for Friday (my childminder being one of them). Friday is usually my day off so freinds are asking me to do things and go places while eldest is at school - hardly gonna tell them I cant cause i'm in court lol.

I am glad i'm finally sorting things out after being in a DMP, IVA and finally BR, should have done this years ago (hind since is a wonderful thing). I cant help feel smug when see these people in flash cars spending on credit cards etc, I am sat there thinking what "i" buy "i" pay for lol .

I am sooo glad I came across this forum the IVA site is great too - did contemplate going to their Frugal Friends in Walsall but not brave enough lol. xx

How are you feeling for friday?

xx

Jenny, you can pay in cheques, cash and withdraw money from the post office. You need the envelopes to pay in cheques but just your card to pay in cash or withdraw (£250 a day max) x
movin on Posted - 15 October 2008 : 20:04:21
Hey Syn

Im not sure if you have phoned and checked with the Abbey beforehand, as i phoned today to let them know im now br and the or will not have an interest in my account. They have said it will be closed, and im not allowed to open another one (even a basic one) - please let me know how you get on with this.

I have opened my coop cashminder account and they sent me some credit envelopes to pay in through the post office - so im presuming you can do a certain amount of banking through the post office themselves. I have not used the account yet as i only went br on monday, so will inform you if this is not right.

Hope this helps

Jenny

Hi Syn

Thats great news about your fees etc.

The coop offer an electron card which i have as my local branch is 40 miles away and i have managed i can buy on ebay via paypal and i buy online too.

The CB wont get touched but the tax credits are an income so technically will be taken into consideration although you must list them all.

Hope i have helped a bit
