Message for Melanie Jenkins - I have lived with my partner for 14 years and we have been in the same house for 10 years. The house is my partners. He has no credit and does not believe in credit. I, on the other hand have over £40,000 and am considering bankruptcy but I have been told because we have been in the house for 10 years and the equity will have increased he can be asked to pay approximately £10,000 towards my debts. When he first found out about my credit problems he helped me financially. He thought I was paying the debts off but the money he gave me only helped me keep my head above water. When he found out - 2 years later - that I was still heavily in debt he hit the roof but gave me £5,000 to pay off Next and Debenham cards. In total he must have given me £15,000 towards my debts. I have only ever contributed £100 per month towards living expenses and feel I have no claim to his property. I wouldn't want him to have to pay even more towards my debts. Can I go bankrupt without him becoming involved?

Hi Gwen

I see Menaie Giles has not responded, you could give our helpline a quick call and see if they can put your mind at rest. Its free and its 0800 078 9367, alternatively you could contact one of the otehr experts listed on the left hand side like Bret or Paul.

LOL

Take Care

Jo x
