Hello again everybody,
I've been working out what my wife and I's I&E would be if we got declared BR and moved into rented accomodation. I was wondering about holiday/xmas/birthdays and social life. I read somewhere about a annual holiday amount of £750-900 for a family and an amount for xmas etc.
Does anyone know if this is allowed as an essential expense and also what the figures are for a working couple with no children? Is there a small amount allowed for a social life?
I am thinking about trying to put down satellite TV as an essential, i remember a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation last year on the BBC which mentioned that it was part of essential everyday life. It also said £13,400 was the minimum for a single person to survive. And it said every adult should be allowed a glass of wine and a few cans every week and a trip to the cinema (can't remember if that was weekly or monthly). Has anyone ever mentioned this report to the OR and had any luck with it?

I too just put phone as it comes out with the virgin dd anyway. ts never been questioned. I also put down a mobile phone and thats not been questioned.
However i did not claim the domestic break and other allowable expenses as i dont incur them.
Onwards and Upwards is the way im going :-0)

I was not allowed socialising, birthdays, xmas or holiday break, however, for internet/phone I just listed it under BT £55 per month, (bit of a sneaky tip there) and the OR never questioned it  |

Baxi has brought up stuff im sure ive read somewhere especially the holiday bit the or makes provision for dont know the figures though.
What John no internet suddenly going before the or doesnt seem so bad its trying to explain to our 14 year old daughter that msn & youtube are not a nessesity thats bothering me now. |

Hi
A domestic break (they don't like the term "holiday") is allowable but the figures you mention are for a family of 4 so you would have to claim approx £40 per month for the 2 of you. It is also becoming less likely that any allowance for gifts will be made. You would be expected to save for these, and socialise, from the proportion of your disposable income which is not claimed by the OR.
No allowances will be made for socialising and or alcohol as such.
Internet and satellite TV are also not claimable unless internet is required for your work.
The OR has guidelines to adhere to so I doubt that the mention of any report will carry much weight with them.
