I read that Barclays and Co-Op are the banks to try but I am worried that if I open one before I'm declared bankrupt the new account will automatically be frozen but if I do it after it might be too late to arrange to get my salary paid in and my direct debits set up!

Most OR offices are fine with a new basic account opened prior to the br. This allows you to transfer all the direct debits, standing orders etc in good time.
The Brighton OR's office are slightly different as they insist that all accounts are closed down. This apparently frustrates the bank because they have the cost and aggravation of reopening an account.
So it really depends upon your geography.
