Can you adopt if you've previously filed for bankruptcy? Do you have to have been discharged for X years?

I have googled, but nothing. Its not an urgent concern, but something we may have to consider in the future.

Are there any special requirements?
There is no 'ideal' type of adopter. People who adopt come from different social, economic and racial backgrounds. However, you will have to meet certain strict criteria, which can vary according to each agency, especially when adopting babies or very young children.

The following will not prevent you from adopting:

Sexuality - both heterosexual and gay couples are equally entitled to apply for adoption.
Religion - Your beliefs might exclude you from adopting certain children, whose birth parents have requested them to be brought up following a particular faith, but it is not an overall barrier to adoption.
Marital status - Unmarried couples are encouraged to apply to adopt. However, unlike married couples, who adopt a child jointly, only one person in an unmarried couple can be granted the adoption order, although this might change in the near future.
Financial status - Agencies will obviously want to ensure that you are solvent enough to provide for a child but the exact level of your income is not important, nor is your employment status, e.g. self-employed, employed or unemployed. Rented accommodation - if you rent a property, rather than own one, this will not matter unless the lease is about to expire and you will have to move out in the near future.

Seems as though they want you to be solvent at the time of adopting and probably will not bar you because you were previously bankrupted. At least, if this website is correct.
