Hello,

I'm going to declare myself bankrupt in a few weeks' time and I just wondered if anyone had encountered any really bad reactions with the OR in relation to gambling debts. A large percentage of my debts are through gambling and I'm scared to death of the OR's reaction. I know I will get a bru/bro, but the thought of the OR condemning me and making me feel like a criminal is making me feel physically sick. I have looked at the insolvency website and to be honest, some of the BRU's aren't as long as I would have thought. Although, saying that, I'll probably get one which is ruthless and decides to give me the full 15 years!!

Almost too scared to go through with the whole thing now and just feel like fleeing the country instead.

Thanks for the replies, Melanie and Lizzie.

Reassuring to hear positive things and maybe I'll be fairly lucky and have a nice OR. I'm attending my first counselling session for gambling next week, so at least I'm trying to get myself back on track. I think the next 2 weeks until I go bankrupt will be the most nerve wrecking, but at least I'll have done it and I can then look to the future free from debt.

Thanks again both

Sadly you won't be the first and certainly not the last client the examiner in the OR's office will deal with who has had gambling problems which have led to the bankruptcy. All I can advise is that you have recognised you have a 'problem' try to seek help to deal with it, without help the prolem will not go away. The OR's office is not there to sit in judgement nor punish. There is no way I or any of the experts can second guess whether or not a BRO is given nor the length of time of any given BRO, but it is rare for a BRO to extend past 3 years

Hope this helps in some small way

Hi xmas baby my hubby's first thought when he finally took his head out of the sand was to skip the country, but I think that would cause more problems then answers, he is not convinced but there is no way I will run away and spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, we had the money and ok it was not gambled away, it was wasted on helping out wayward sons and holidays to get away from it all and trying to renovate a house that we had both lost interest in, but imagine the pressure that would be put on my sons that live here to disclose where their parents are. So the OR might give you a hard time and you might get a bru/bro though reading on here most of the OR's are ok. You can be pleased with yourself that you recognised you had a problem and got it sorted so all power to you. At the end of the day the OR might judge you but then again they might not.......after all there have been many before you and no doubt will be many after. Just hold your head up high, you have this site to support you and help you.

Take Care
