Hi
Another hurdle crossed. I was declared bankrupt last Wednesday and contacted natwest to see if they would allow me to keep my step account. I was told that until they received notification of my BR from the OR they couldn't make a decision and that the process could take up to 3 weeks. As my salary is due and the bills need paying I contacted the co-op by phone for a cashminder account. A 10 minute application process and an instant decision and I now have a new bank account (well in 7-10 days). Great news and all those in a similar position take heart there is life after bankruptcy.

I must admit I changed my BR when I was BR and it didn't occur to me to tell the OR!
Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

I had a coop account prior to BR and they were one of my creditors (and one of the nastiest too) I was told by them that I could use the account, however the OR Said I should recheck with someone more senior, which I did and they confirmed it was ok to use the account, when I spoke to the OR Examiner I told her about coop and she said she had no interest in it, so I am free to use it, but she will leave an allowance of £12.50 a month for Thinkbanking or OneBanking just incase.
I would inform your OR just as a matter of being nice.

I emptied my natwest account the day before my BR hearing and cancelled all DD and standing orders so it doesn't really matter whether they close it or not. I contacted all the companies explaining the situation and why I had cancelled the payments and either arranged to pay them another way or they agreed to postpone the date of the payment until I could set up another direct debit with the co-op. Overall I have found most people are very helpful.

how long did it take for peoples accts to be sorted after applying by post? I've still heard nothing, and mine was sent more than a week ago |

NO problem in transferring pay and DD's as soon as account operationsl, just inform the OR at the interview that you have set this account up

Hi
Just received my welcome pack from the co-op today. Does anyone know if I can start transferring my direct debits and my wage etc to the new account or will I have to wait till after the OR interview.
Can the account be frozen tomorrow after my hearing at court?

Hi Shirley
I'm a new bankrupt so I don't know how relevant my advice will be but I thought I'd better warn you of my experience. As soon as Alliance & Leicester were notified of my bankruptcy they closed my account without warning and sent the available funds to the OR. I did get the money, eventually, but it took over a month to go through the system so I'd make sure you have some funds available before your Co-Op account becomes active. I've got a Co-Op Cashminder too and it's great-no hassles! |
