Posted - 05 March 2009 : 17:18:48 my fiance is in alot of debt with utility companies and a loan providor. She is unable to work due to illness and is signed off work work yearly she is in hospital very ofetn has limited benifits to live on what can she do? is bankruptcy the answer?

Posted - 05 March 2009 : 17:32:30 Hi there and welcome to the forum The advice I can give depends on the amount of debt your fiance has. If under £15k she may be eligible for the new Debt Relief Order (DRO) coming into effect from 6th April (providing she does not own a house)The fee for filing a DRO is £90 and can be arranged by making an appointment with the local Citizens Advice Bureau who are administering these orders. If her total debt is over this amount bankruptcy is the solution - the fee for this is £495 akthough there are reductions for those on beenfits, again if she speaks to her local CAB they can advise her of reductions and vouchers which are available via utility companies to help fund the costs. I personally think that given her health problems and debt situation she should contact the CAB make an appointment with a Money Adviser and go from there, if bankruptcy is her option we can provide loads of support and help on here.
