Posted - 20 March 2009 : 15:42:01 Reason for bankruptcy:
I don’t blame anyone but myself for the situation I find I self into today..
Prior to marriage in 1997 I only had a overdraft on £500 when I moved in with my former wife.
We had a baby and needed to move from our 1 bed flat. My ex wife had at the time CCJ and credit card debts I manage to pay off her debts so we could get a mortage.
Once we moved to our new home credit cards were used for furnishings etc and eventually we were getting into difficulties . We seeked help from Llyods bank who gave us a budget account and a loan to clear credit cards which we did only to use them again getting us into a deeper mess. Lloyds then offer us a £14,000 loans to clear all debts which we again took with total repayment somewhere around £22,000..
We were managing ok keeping heads above water and our 2nd child was born once again credit cards were used.
I was medical retired from Royal mail with a small pension and started working for myself as money wasn’t coming in on a regular basis my ex wife didn’t like this even though I looked after my girls every afternoon did all the housing work, ironing cooking and putting them to bed and getting them ready for nursery and eventually school..
My ex wife then decided to change jobs and had a wage cut of about £10,000 and more hours which put a strain on relationship and more difficulties in repaying debts.
She eventually said to me I have found someone with more money then you and want a divorce.
I had all the debts in my name £27000 and she bought me out of the house and I got £30,000 with hind sight should of paid the debts off but decided to try and make a go with working for myself. I was running a oven cleaning service and also started doing a domestic appliance repairs course and bought equip and tools and spent money on advertising I found domestic appliance repairs a struggle with national competition and decided to add carpet cleaning which I bought more equipment and did another course.
I used the £30,000 to try and build a business with tools equipment and advertising my income was low so also used for daily living also furniture for my new flat
I spent more time and money trying to get work then doing work .
I decided to move to Cornwall away from my ex wife for various reason and tried carpet cleaning there without mush success again asting time and money on advertising.
My new partner and I rented a house unfortunately the house was hit by lightening and we lost everything all we had was clothes on out back and no insurance. So again money was tight
We decide to move to Whitby N.Yorkshire near her parents. We rented a house and need furniture as we had nothing again money was tight our relationship didn’t last as she became a alcoholic and I couldn’t handle that. I became friends with her brother who put me up on his boat in Hartlepool where I stayed from about 18 months.
I then moved to Salisbury to look after my elderly father who had a fall breaking his shoulder and a heart attck and that s where I am today sleeping on his sofa and have been for 3 years even though we are on the housing register to move. So dealing with him see my girls having medical condition and housing, debts haven’t been my priority though I now realise they should have been . Mistakenly as I kept moving no creditor had caught up with me and I thought they were leaving me alone until a debt arrived in the post which I didn’t know about I had and then decided I cant keep burying my head in the sand and needed to sort this debt problem out and get on with my life hence where I am today…

Posted - 20 March 2009 : 17:14:46 Wouldn't we all!!! just state on the forms everything you are responsible for - if you pay the bills put them down, if however your father pays the bills and you pay 'board' state that (max £200 per month though) board includes your contribution to all bills - as technically you are living with your father and as such he has the responsibility for the bills as they are in his name, you can contribute but via a 'board' contribution.

Posted - 20 March 2009 : 16:29:13 Your reasons are fine, but to be honest a litle bit too much information. You really do not need a detailed life history, just brief statement as to how you have found yourelf in this situation - you've done the statement now so use it, but for anyone else reading this post don't worry, many people only put a single statement along the lines of 'living beyond my means'
Well done though on making the decision to file for bankruptcy - debt does not disappear and the sooner someone realises the seriousness of a debt situation ie that they cannot repay their commitments and seek a solution the better it is for everyone, life can continue after bankruptcy, and without the burden that debt brings, life can be a whole lot better, perhaps with hindsight you would have made the decision sooner, well done though and good luck
