Posted - 27 March 2009 : 21:03:20 I was declared bankrupt on 4 March. I have just received pet insurance payout cheques for my dog who was very ill last year (and sadly died in January). I told the insurance company I was going bankrupt and I had to stop my other 2 dog insurance direct debits temporarily, until I had a new bank account. The cheques have been issued in my name but followed by "in bankruptcy". I was furious as it was there on display for all to see in the window envelopes (all 5 of them). Also I was not told about this or what it means to me. Does anyone know what I do with these cheques? Do I have to give them to the Receiver, or pay them in my bank? I have no idea! |

Posted - 28 March 2009 : 14:10:41 I informed my car insurance company that I was BR as I understand some companies cancel insurance if you're BR. I didn't want to take a chance if I had to make a claim while I was BR, which as it happens I did!

Posted - 28 March 2009 : 11:22:09 I would not have told the insurance company about the bankruptcy. I have 2 pedigree cats and I never told the insurance company that I was bankrupt and I have kept the insurance on, I even claimed for a reward when my beloved cat went missing for nearly 3 weeks and a lady found him, we paid the reward money to her and the insurance company sent me a cheque which I kept. |

Posted - 28 March 2009 : 00:09:39 Thanks Stu and John. I will speak to the OR about this. Needless to say, this insurance company has now lost about £60 per month in dog insurance premiums from us, as I will not be continuing our policies for our other 3 dogs.

Posted - 27 March 2009 : 21:20:33 Hi
you have every right to feel agrieved at the callous manner in which the cheques were received.
No bank will cash those cheques for you and the insurance company knows that. You should pass them to the OR as they will be able to arrange for them to be cashed. I would also write to the insurance company expressing your disappointment.
Truth is your bankruptcy is a matter of public record so there is no action you can take but a little more understanding would not go amiss.

Posted - 27 March 2009 : 21:15:02 Hi
im not 100% positive but I think you need to hand them over to the official receiver as he / she has total control over your estate and therefore this money would go towards the creditors.
If I was you I would ring your official receiver or the examiner dealing with your case and ask them what they want done with them.
Welcome to the forum and best of luck.
