i have currenlty got a SMILE (co-op) account, and have a £500 overdraft which i am to its limit. i am considering going bankrupt and putting this £500 overdraft in with all my other debts.

Due to this i need to find a new bank account that will accept bankruptees. am i right in presuming i wont get another co op account? and if not who should i try?

I was with Lloyds prior to my BR and they were happy for me to keep the account as well. They are also the only insurer who would give us home insurance as well as I was BR at the time, and we live in a flood risk area!

I'm glad you got it sorted out x

Thanks for all the advice.

i went to Natwest and was told they wouldnt open an account for me until i had gone bankrupt and they recieved a letter from the court.

Yorkshire Bank informed me that they could open me an account but as soon as i go bankrupt they would close it!! (Very helpful)

Lloyds TSB, agreed to open an account as long as my credit rating wasnt too bad (which it isnt yet) and agreed to keep it open once go bankrupt. They were very helpful and even offered cheaper house insurance!! :D

Thanks again

Hi
From personal experience, Abbey, Lloyds, Halifax, Yorkshire Bank, Yorkshire Building Society, Santander, Natwest, RBS wont accept undischarged bankrupts.

I had a debt of £1500 with Coop and they let me have an account (cashminder) when I went BR, they wouldnt let me use it when I was in an IVA as the Debt was still live however when I went BR they were happy for me to use it.

Give coop a ring and see if they will let you have an account, if not try Barclays or Thinkbanking.

Good Luck

YOu are able to open a basic account with any bank, although some do not have a cash card facility. As the Co-op will be out of the question for a new account as smile are operated by the co-op a good account to try would be the Natwest Step account or Yorkshire Bank both of whom have a cash card facility, as does Barclays & Abbey basic accounts - you will need to open an account which is not linked to any of your debts
