Just been to open a new bank account and they told me that once you become bankrupt you are no longer allowed Direct debits to pay bills. Is this true? |

I have a co-op cashminder account and since I became bankrupt 1 month ago I have continued to pay all my direct debits using this account without any problems. I originally set up the account a month before going bankrupt and informed both the bank manager of my intended BK and asked him to make sure the account wasn't frozen, which he said would be no problem. I also informed the OR when I spoke to her after my bankruptcy date, although I hadn't listed the account on my SOA as it wasn't one of my creditors. Again, she said there would be no problem with this account.

It would seem that the most popular post BR bank account is the COOP cashminder account very BR friendly

Hi
there are certain basic bank accounts that dont allow direct debits and/or standing orders these are:
Natwest Cash Account - not step
Spectrum Services account - OneBanking, Red888, ExtraDirect
CredECard Services account - Theonyx, L4Group, CredECard
Certain banks will stop you using direct debits, to my knowledge Yorkshire Building Society Cash transactor account and Coventry BS Money Manager do these.

I think the majority of basic accounts allow this facility, whether you are bankrupt or not.

I have a Barclays basic account and have direct debits on it |

Hi jelojo
I think it depends on who you are going with. If its a Co-op Cashminder account, then this allows direct debits, standing orders, bank transfers and a visa electron card.
