Hi - I've got to make a 'reasonable' offer on my car on the sum of £625. I'm wondering what is reasonable - is there any sort of guidance, e.g. three-quarters, a half??
I was thinking around £450 - is this too low? any and all advice please! |

I'll see if it can be salvaged from home (that is check it hasn't already made it's way to the guinea pig pen) and let you know if successful when I'm next in the office which is Wednesday of next week.

there you go....even you missed it!!!
It was in last night's D..... E... one of about 4 or 5. Yours was a very short entry but all the others had previous addresses, trading names etc etc which served to shield yours somewhat.
As I said I'm probably the only saddo in the county that actually reads them.
Ok I'll stump up for the doughnuts but I'd need a days notice to pop into your town as the bakers are so much nicer there than where I am.LOL!

Hi - just checked out where you're offices are and yes, its likely me that was in the paper, I'm in the town not far down the road from you - are they in today then? I don't get the paper normally. And yes I'll bring the donuts - I can afford them now - ha ha!!! |

do forgive me and I know it's sad, or rather it's because of the industry I'm in, but I have to confess to showing an interest in the Insolvency adverts that appear from time to time in my local paper. Knowing from the forum that you recently petitioned in Dorset my powers of deduction, such as they are, tell me you may well reside no more than a few miles from our office.
So if you ever want to discuss any issues in person please feel free to pop in for a coffee and a doughnut, although you'd have to bring the doughnut!! LOL!!

I would say that on offer of that nature when taking into account the OR's cost to arrange a sale may well be accepted. Worth a try.

Glad I found this post ! I too need to make an offer on my car-(as my posts from monday) Its value on my SOA was put at 950 but this was the price quoted by my IVA company last yr so would now be less,and also based on perfect condition
From going to garages last couple days they have advised would be less,,,due to scratches and some small dents. Not to mention garages doing such good deals
They would value at around 700- I was going to offer 350- would u say this is ok???
I honestly dont know how I would get by without it whilst trying to get work and attend interviews and would certainly need transport when I find work. |

AAh I see.
Perhaps a little late to argue the value itself then.
But based on my previous post you might like to put your views on the cost of sale to the OR and make what may appear to you as a low offer.
If it were me I would not start any higher than £200 having given the reasons why.
The OR is usually firm but fair and you need to make this proposal in a similar vain.
Non aggressive, politely, of course, but giving a clear indication that you are aware of the costs to the OR if he were to seize the car and sell it through auction and therefore see the offer as reasonable based on his valuation of £2625.

Hi John, thanks for those calculations. After research I'd actually thought it was worth around 3,000 which is what I put on my SOA, so I was surprised when he told me it was £2625 |

if you were able to obtain a written valuation of the car to present to the examiner, one which shows the value lower, you may not need to pay anything.
What is the make / model / year / cc / mileage / condition / manual or auto?
Even if the estimated value is accurate.
£250 to have it collected and taken to auction.
Sold at £2625 the auction fees, if 10% for example, are £262.50.
So £625 less £250 less £262.50 = £112.50 which is what I would offer and I would give the above explanation as to how I came to think such an offer was reasonable. That said, I would definitely research the current market value first.

I dunno really - some independent party I assume - or internet search on Parkers or something. the examiner took all the details of my car and then at my meeting on Monday told me it had been valued at 2625 (it could have been 2600, can't quite remember) and I had to make an offer on the 625 to be able to keep it. |

I see. My car is 625 over the 2000 as far as I've understood I need to make the offer on the 625. I obviously don't want to take the p*ss, but don't want to pay over the odds. |
