He has asked me to pay this month's rent by cheque to his father as he currently has no bank account - is this alright for me to do? Secondly I would really like to buy the property and having sold my home would be a cash buyer is there anything I could be doing towards achieving this?

contact the Official Receiver's office dealing with your landlord's case. It may be that you should now pay rent to them rather than your landlord's father. It's true your landlord may not have an active bank account right now but technically he is no longer your landlord anyway, the OR is.
