Hoping to go BR soon but dreading what will happen with the cars. At the moment we have 2 cars, 1 family car and another cheap runaround. I don't work locally and so use one car to get to work whilst my husband uses the other for work and to drop youngest at nursery. I cannot get to work via public transport without having to set off about 3 hours in advance which just isn't worth me doing.
Will they allow us to keep a car? Unfortunately the cheapest of them simply won't fit us all in as a family as have 2 kids and another due in November. Family car value is approx £2750 and other is £750 - £1k.
I know it sounds pathetic but I'm not sure how we'd manage without a car at all. Would the OR see that I need one for work? |

I can only point to what actually happened to me, 6 weeks ago, regarding car values...e.t.c. I`m sure the O.R will be helpfull, due to your circumstances... |

Thank you both, really we could probably manage if we had to with one car. If it came down to it though and they took both away then I really don't think I could get to work and in the current climate (and because I'm pregnant!) I'm not likely to find another job and would lose any maternity pay too! Surely they will take this into consideration.
Also, we'll be going bankrupt only a matter of months before I start maternity leave. Will the OR review our budget again so soon after it's been set? I only work part time so there won't be a massive difference between my wage and my maternity pay but significant enough for us to struggle, plus our outgoings will increase too. |

Hi, I do need to inform you of my recent experience..
The value of my car is only £750, and the O.R asked if i neeeded the car??!....So i said i needed it for hospital, and the O.R asked if it was a distance issue, or a health issue, to which i of course replied....Health issue. I was allowed to keep it. This is a very grey area and probably depends on your O.R. and your need for a car.
I don`t think people should assume that because their car is below £2500, the O.R won`t want it. |

If you need both cars for the both of you to get to work then you should be able to keep both. There may be a problem with the family car as normally any car above £2000 is considered too high a value by the OR.
Have a look on the Parkers Guide website (http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/prices/) to check exactly how much the car is worth as the ORs use this as well. If it is too high for the OR then you normally have the option of:
- Letting the OR take the car and he will give you £2k to buy another car.
- Paying the additional amount over the £2k up to the value of the car i.e. if the car is valued at £2750 then you would have to pay £750. This doesn't sound as bad as it is as you may be able to negotiate a lower amount with the OR as he would have to pay the cost of picking up the car and selling it on. |
