Posted - 09 May 2009 : 13:22:086.7 How much do other members of your household contribute each month to household expenses?
I share a flat with my girlfriend, who has only recently just moved in actually. She's earns a pittance (minimum wage).
Regarding the above question (6.7) on the S.O.A does the answer they are looking for relate to.....
(a) her contribution towards the rent
(b) her contribution towards shopping
(c) her contribtion to utility bills
or
(d) a total amount (in terms of £££ monthly) of all the above?
Thanks

I thought I read somewhere the OR can ask you to "volunteer" information on the other half's income and if you do not "volunteer" the information the OR can (wrongly?)conclude that you get 50% of your rent and bills paid by your other half? Therefore you get stuffed on your IPA!!!!!
I haven't heard of this but do know that the OR cannot force your partner to contribute to the bills and can only base the IPA on your I&E. If your girlfriend can't afford to contribute then don't feel obliged to put anything down. When you have the OR interview they may ask about any contribution but just explain that she earns minimum wage and needs her wage to visit her family in Poland.

Unless this is just one extreme example someone had with an OR or a post I read somewhere that was not correct?
Thanks again for quick reply.
PS - It's a new relationship, she does not earn much (take home £500 or so per month) and sometimes she can't afford to give me her contribution to the rent anyway, so yes, I am tempted to reduce her contribution on the official S.O.A to as little as reasonably possible.
Plus she's Polish and is sending money back to Poland and keeping money for trips to see family etc, etc

Posted - 09 May 2009 : 13:28:12 This would be '(d) a total amount'. Think carefully what you put here as this would be included in working out whether you have an IPA and how much you pay.
Your girlfriend is not obliged to contribute and the OR cannot force you to include a contribution on your I&E.
